    WANG Na, PAN Yuntao, MA Zheng & WU Yishan. Scopus vs WOS as scientifi c evaluation tools: A comparative analysis based on a testing sample search on the topic of electric vehicles[J]. 数据与情报科学学报, 2010, 3(1): 20-34.

    Based on a bibliometric analysis in combination with other information analysis methods, this paper compares the different evaluation results on the subject of “electric  vehicles” drawn from Web of Science (WOS) and from Scopus. We came to the following conclusions after a careful comparison of  these two databases. Firstly, both WOS and Scopus would provide some valid and unique evaluation indicators. Secondly, they showed similar results in terms of evaluating research performance of countries and research organizations involved in the targeted subject fields. In fact, both databases are good for discovering the research trend in general at the macroscopic level. Lastly, we ought to take the disciplinary characteristics, the extent of journal inclusion and resource selection criteria as well as inevitable data errors into full account in making recommendations to policy decision-makers.

    With the arrival of the information age, research activities focused on the practice and approaches of knowledge services are on a marked increase as evidenced in the publications of social sciences. According to a social network analysis on knowledge service related literature, it reveals that information and knowledge workers often fail to take such an important element as the functional role of an emotive engagement into consideration in their study of knowledge services. It has increasingly become an issue of high profile with the rapid development of digital libraries and their web-based knowledge services in China and anywhere else in the world. In order to have a clearer understanding about issues involved in knowledge servicing so as to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of digital libraries in their knowledge service performance, the author has conducted surveys for seven times on the online information seeking behavior of graduate students at the Chinese Academy of Sciences with such research methods as questionnaires, interviews and natural observations during September 2006-June 2009. The research result has showed the emotive element has an important role in the user's information seeking behavior and in knowledge services practice. Therefore, knowledge services rendered may be more effective by adding the emotiveness-oriented communication element into such practice. This paper recommends that such an emotiveness-oriented communication approach should be carefully studied and factored into libraries' knowledge services practice.

    GUO Jing & CHEN Jin. A study of subject-focused liaison services to its academic constituents under an IC2 conceptualized program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library[J]. 数据与情报科学学报, 2010, 3(1): 50-64.

    This paper stipulates that the subject-based library liaison service to a university's teaching and research programs with certain embedded distinctive features should become the mainstream modus operandi of its library service. It takes the innovative service program based on an IC2 conceptualized program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library(thereafter abbreviated as SJTUL) as a concrete example to elucidate the merit of such an endeavor. Specifically, this paper discusses the particular development background, overall objectives and service contents of the IC2 motivated program at SJTUL. By presenting a detailed account of some of the key measures, major achievements and also possible future directions of library service development under the guiding principles of SJTUL's IC2 program, these authors hope that its innovative library practice may serve as a reference for other academic librarians to gain some inspirations for their own parallel service innovations or refinement focused on subject-oriented library liaison service to their constituents and parent institution's curricula and research projects.

    The article tries to discover the major authors in the field of information seeking behavior via social network analysis. It is to be accomplished through a literature review and also by focusing on a graphic map showing the seven most productive co-authors in this field. Based on these seven authors'  work, five probable research directions about information seeking behavior are discerned and presented.

    LI Donglai. In search of service innovations by public libraries in Chinese urban centers: A case study of Dongguan Library[J]. 数据与情报科学学报, 2010, 3(1): 79-94.

    This article introduces several of the more significant service delivery innovations and their resulting accomplishments instigated by Dongguan Library (thereafter abbreviated as DGL) in recent years. The textual exposition of this paper is based on a case study of DGL by this author about its user-centered vision, mission, immediate objectives and the exhibited service performance within a contextual environment of collegial support from its professional   peers. After a five-year period of intensive efforts on such focused professional development and practice, DGL has completed its information service mapping and information delivery for the entire municipality of Dongguan on a 7-day and twenty-four-hour (7/24) basis. This singular feast of accomplishment seems to suggest the moral that any significant development of scale of a municipal library has to be in keeping pace closely with the progress of the society at large in general and with the changing information demands of its local clientele in particular.
