Introduced by physicist Jorge E. Hirsch in 2005, the H-index sought to offer a balanced view of both the quantity and quality of scientific output. However, two decades on, it is essential to rethink the relationship between productivity and impact in the evolving landscape of academic evaluation. As we approach the 20th anniversary of the H-index, it is an opportune moment to reflect on its significance.
To mark this milestone, we invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to contribute to our special topic on "Rethinking Productivity vs Impact: 20 Years of H-index." We welcome critical perspectives, empirical studies, theoretical explorations, and alternative frameworks that delve into how the H-index has influenced research practices, the challenges it presents, and how we might move beyond traditional metrics in future evaluations of scientific success. Submit your manuscripts and join us in this important conversation about the future of academic assessment.
